According to Android's 2024 usage statistics, 82% of users prefer dark mode when given the choice. Apple's iOS dark mode adoption sits at 78%. Premium software brands — from Figma and VS Code to Spotify and YouTube — offer dark mode as a core feature, not an afterthought. But dark mode's dominance isn't purely aesthetic preference. It's rooted in psychology, physiology, and brand perception patterns that designers should understand deeply.
The Physiological Case for Dark Mode
Human eyes are adapted for daylight — which is ambient light reflected from objects, not direct light emitted at the viewer. A traditional white-background screen is effectively shining a light source directly at the user's eyes. In low-light environments (evening, dimly lit rooms, which is when most recreational digital use occurs), this creates significant eye strain. Dark mode reduces the luminance emission from screens, particularly on OLED displays where dark pixels are literally switched off and consume zero power.
Research published in Ophthalmology and Vision Science shows that dark mode reduces accommodation demand on the eye's lens in low-light conditions. However — and this is the nuance most discussions miss — in bright ambient light conditions (outdoors, well-lit offices), light mode text on a white background actually produces better readability because it leverages the same high-contrast, light-reflective conditions that make printed text readable.

The Technical Challenges of Good Dark Mode Design

Pure white (#FFFFFF) text on a pure black (#000000) background creates excessive contrast that causes halation — text appears to 'glow' against the dark background, making sustained reading physically uncomfortable. The correct approach is elevated dark surfaces: backgrounds at #121212–#1E1E1E, with text at #E8E8E8 rather than pure white. This creates contrast sufficient for legibility without the halation effect.

Implementing Dark Mode in CSS: The Correct Approach
Use CSS custom properties (variables) for all colour values, and change the variable values in the `prefers-color-scheme: dark` media query. Never hardcode colour values directly in component styles — this makes dark mode implementation require touching every component individually. A properly architected design system defines semantic tokens: `--color-background`, `--color-surface`, `--color-text-primary`, `--color-text-secondary`. The dark mode media query overrides these token values, and the entire interface adapts automatically.
Additionally, provide a manual toggle alongside the system preference. Many users want dark mode on their operating system but light mode for specific content-heavy websites. Respecting user preference at the app level — persisted via `localStorage` — is the professional standard. Libraries like `next-themes` handle this elegantly for Next.js applications, managing hydration without flash-of-unstyled-content (FOUC) issues.
